PGA studied several street typologies for this main street realignment. The selected design incorporated rain gardens, bike paths, special paving along the retail strip, custom-rammed earth seatwalls and new site furnishings. The project’s goal was to be an economic stimulus to the downtown by converting a main street (former Route 4) from a wide, vehicle-dominated strip to a more cloistered and walkable main street. The initial vision drawings of the project spurred investment, and the project was completed in 2013. Several formerly empty storefronts are now occupied with new shops and services (taqueria, cupcake bakery, sports store), and landowners of adjacent properties have begun to rebuild their storefronts to attract tenants.
