Route 17 & Gateway

The Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority realigned White Oaks Boulevard and widened the section of Highway 17 from Camden to Hamilton. PGA staff evaluated the existing vegetation along this corridor and identified worthwhile plants to retain. A simple but effective gateway planting for Campbell was created by mounding the surplus construction soil and planting the top with dozens of redwood trees, while the slopes were planted with grasses and a grid of flowering hawthorns to reflect the area’s orchard history. In lieu of regrading the slope, PGA worked with the design team, Caltrans, VTA and City of Campbell to strategically place low retaining walls and guardrails, thus sparing the large, mature California pepper and redwood trees on the site.
